There will be more content than ever
Text, images, audio, video—all of it is being created at breakneck speed. Generative AI has unlocked a new era of creation by making it dead simple. There are endless tools built on top of OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, etc. that put generative AI in the hands of the everyday consumer.
For a few years now, generating text has been widely available via ChatGPT and Claude. Now, in late 2024, images, audio and video are catching up. There are multiple players generating images, including Midjourney, OpenAI, and Google. ElevenLabs and similar startups have made big leaps in generative voice this year. OpenAI and Google both unveiled video generation models in December 2024 that are impressive (Google looks to be ahead).
What are the implications of all this content?
In our personal lives, the cognitive overload of the internet will get worse. There is already too much of everything—social media, news, blogs, podcasts, memes, etc. No one is able to consume it all because the content river is rapid and 24x7. On top of that, algorithms decide what you see, unless you’re viewing a reverse chronological feed.
There will also be more content we need to consume to do our jobs. For example, all your meetings will come with detailed notes generated by an AI assistant. That will save us time, which is useful. But the expectation will be that you have digested those notes. You’ll have notes from meetings you couldn’t join—and will need to read those too.
That feeling of constantly being behind leads to more stress and anxiety. On top of that, it’s frustrating to think that all the good stuff is being drowned out because of everything else.
We’re going to need tools to combat this overload. These tools should understand what we want to see and filter out what we don’t care about. They should take content as an input and as output a personalized, curated experience.
